Brackett House

This one-story pioneer home and its low stone landscaped walls on the west and north sides were built with stones salvaged from Fort Gunnison. Based on its architecture, this hall-parlor type house may date to the 1860’s. with a pair of windows flanking the central door, the house is longer than many others of this type which have only a single window in each of two smaller rooms. The stone is squared and laid in courses and the brick chimneys indicate the location of interior stoves. The house seems little-altered and well-preserved. It is one of the oldest of first generation homes built in Gunnison. The story of this home is unknown but longs to be told.
