500+ Miles of ATV Trails
This past weekend my in-laws came down to ride ATVs up Ephraim Canyon. There are 500+ miles of mountain roads and trails to ATV ride in Sanpete. The weather was absolutely beautiful. The sky was blue and the mountain temperature was pleasant. We started our ride, as usual, from my driveway.
Most of the small towns in Sanpete are very ATV friendly and have designated ATV routes through town. If you stay on the right roads and keep your speed to 15 MPH, law enforcement will leave you alone. Because I live at the mouth of Ephraim Canyon it only takes a few minutes to get from my house to the gravel canyon road.
About one mile up Ephraim Canyon road is a turnoff known by the locals as ‘The Backbone’ trail. This road is somewhat of a shortcut to get to
Willow Creek. In reality it probably takes you longer to get there but it is definitely the scenic route. Once we came to the Willow Creek Road we headed south until we found a nice place in the trees to have a picnic. My wife made BBQ Beef in the crock pot at home and brought some for sandwiches.
After lunch we took a trail that headed east towards ‘Middle Mountain’. On this trail we past through various mountain creeks and mud holes. This area also has many ponds, some of which were dammed up by beavers. As we rode the trail we noticed many elk tracks in the mud and I even caught a quick glimpse of a deer. After riding for a while we found a nice clearing in the aspens and pulled out my .22 pistol and did some target practicing. I think I need a little more practice! The ATV trail finally passed by Lake Hill Campground and back onto the main canyon road. We then headed down the canyon for home. What a great day!
