ATV Riding…From your Motel?

I'd Rather be Playing! on July 17th, 2008

I was walking down main street in Manti this afternoon and passed the Manti Country Village Motel. The parking lot was full of ATV riders getting ready to go for a ride. I asked one of the ladies as I passed where she was from. “There are 12 of us here from the Ogden area” she said. They quickly drove their ATV’s across the street to the Sinclair Gas Station to fuel up, and then I assume up Manti Canyon.

I am grateful the towns in the Sanpete Valley are ATV friendly. It wasn’t like this when I was a teenager. In most Sanpete towns you can ride your ATV from your motel right up the canyon. I must warn you however, you need to stay on designated routes and keep your speed under 15 MPH.

Hiking Mt. Nebo

I'd Rather be Playing! on July 16th, 2008

I have lived in the Sanpete Valley most of my life without hiking one of the most prominent landmarks in the area, Mt. Nebo. Over the years family members have often expressed a desire to hike it, but we never seemed to do it.

Probably the most scenic view of the mountain is from the Sanpete Valley. There are 3 peaks on the mountain with the highest being the one on the north. (11,928 ft.) To start the hike take the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway. At the Nebo/Bench Trailhead parking lot, take a dirt road about 3/4 of a mile to the cattle guard. From here the trail heads west along the barbed wire fence. (Lat:39.84355 Lon:-111.72062) Nebo Information

The view from the top is amazing. I could see Sanpete Valley to the southeast, Mona reservoir to the west, and Utah Lake to the north. The round trip hike took us 7 hours. This of course included a 50 minute lunch and rest at the summit.
